The History of Bobcat®
E.G. Melroe founded the Melroe Manufacturing Company in Gwinner, North Dakota back in 1947. He was also the inventor of the Melroe pickup and the harroweeder. After his death in 1955, his sons took over the company, growing the farm implement business until 1958 when they met inventors, Cyril and Louis Keller.
The Kellers used to repair farm equipment pieces till the day a customer complained about how hard it was to keep the second story of his turkey barn neat and clean. To help with that, the Kellers built a simple front-end loader with two drive wheels and a rear caster wheel. This machine was a huge success at the Minnesota State Fair and the brothers were quickly employed by Melroe.
In 1962, the M440 was launched, and it was the first loader to bear the name Bobcat. Over time, other machines were given names like Big Bob or Mini-Bob. Soon enough the name “Bobcat” began to stick and in 2000, Melroe company finally changed its name to Bobcat Company to reflect its primary brand identity.
The company has gone from producing loaders, excavators, and attachments to manufacturing telehandlers, load backhoes, utility vehicles, and light construction products. Nowadays, Bobcat equipment has become a go-to choice for many whose daily work involves the use of heavy equipment.
